General Questions

Is the game based on actual events?

Not quite 😉 The school is quite real, though… Zespół Szkół Technicznych in Mikołów, Poland.

Are the people in the game real?

Yes, the characters are based on my classmates.

Putting the rough layout of school’s grounds and all my friends in the game was what made it so much fun to write and later play. It’s also a great device for activating the memory lane.

Of course, your milage *will* vary. 😀

What computer does this game run on?

It was written for 8-bit Atari home computers. It should work fine on Atari 800XL, 65XE and 130XE. Or on emulators of those systems.

What’s with the ugly colors?

Horrible, right?

Back in those days, graphic capabilities of computers were pretty limited. In order to get enough resolution (pixels across and down the screen) to fit text and some graphics, we had to forgo using more than 4 colors.

The next step was to find a 4 color palette that would satisfy all images in the game, so we have looked at a few possible options and what you see was the best one. Yes. Others were worse 😀

Gameplay Questions

What’s the objective of the game?

The front door’s locked. Find a way out.

How do I play?

The game is divided into a few dozen (perhaps more – it’s been a long time since I wrote it) locations. When you arrive at a new location, you can read its description, including possible exits, items that can be found there and any individuals who are present.

You can also carry up to four items and can wear things.

You move around using N, E, S, and W commands. Like in every other text adventure game, these stand for North (północ), East (wschód), South (południe), and West (zachód).

Most other commands usually follow a verb noun pattern, although there are some that are verb only.

To see all possible verbs that the game recognizes, use command słówka.

How do I type Polish letters on the Atari keyboard?

To be honest, I do not remember, but in the emulator (on a Mac) I use the control key. For example, to get słówka, I type s, control-;, control-p, w, k, a.
